Miss Rose Jane Brogan, 87, a former Battle Creek business-woman and a member of one of the city's pioneer families, died at the home of her neice, Mrs. Millard Hayward of 59 Greenwood avenue, at 4:10 p.m. Sunday. She had been confined to her bed for 18 months after suffering a fractured hip in a fall at her residence.

Miss Brogan was a lifelong resident of Battle Creek, and for most of her life had been active in St. Phillip Catholic church and the Altar society of the church. She was forn in Battle Creek on Dec. 25, 1861, a daughter of Patrick and Margaret (Bradley) Brogan, bother of whom came to America from their native Ireland midway in the 19th century. As a child she attended the old No.3 school, which stood on the site of the present Ann J. Kellogg school, and then later she attended the Battle Creek high school. At the age of 16 she began to work in the mechanical department of the Battle Creek Journal and seven years later, in 1905, she joined her sister Miss Mary Brogan in a business venture, "Brogan's Art Needlework Store", on the corner of West Michigan avenue and McCamly, on the site where the Central Tower now stands. In 1912, the needlework shop was sold to Joseph Dean, and the sisters retired. Mary Brogan died in 1919. For a number of years following, Miss Brogan lived at the old Brogan homestead at 216 West Van Buren, and then 12 years ago she moved to the home of her niece, Mrs. Hayward.

Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Hayward, and Mrs. Otto Buehler of 745 North avenue; and a nephew, Allen T. Duffy of 214 Highland avenue and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
