Death: Mar. 31, 1899 East Leroy, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
According to the MI death record, he died at age 58 yrs, 5 mos, 17 ds. That would make his birthdate about Oct 14, 1840 (this is probably incorrect). BUT virtually all censuses point to 1844 or 1845. The Civil War records have him born in about 1843. The birthdate does need to be verified.
According to the death record, he was 23 years old when he was (first) married.
His parents were Abijah S Welton and Sally R Mason, both were born in N.Y.
He married Henrietta Frances Richardson, she was often called "Nettie". Together, they had 5 children, all were living at the time of his death.

He was a farmer and a painter.
MILITARY - CIVIL WAR
At age 18 (that makes his birth year 1843), he enlisted in Company E, Michigan 6th Infantry Regiment on 22 Aug 1861. THen he was in Company E, Michigan HA. Then he was in Company A, Michigan 7th Cavalry. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 15 May 1863.
He was again promoted to Full Sergeant on 15 Jan 1864.
He was mustered out on 11 Jan 1864 at Port Huron, Louisiana.
