MICHIGAN — Authorities say a 22-year-old Cass County man accused of murdering his family shot himself to death Tuesday despite efforts to persuade him to surrender.

The Cass County Sheriff's Department said Keith Driskel Jr. died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound a day after his parents and younger brother were found dead in Newberg Township.

Arrest warrants had been issued charging Driskel with three counts of murder in the deaths of Keith Driskel Sr., 41; his wife, Kim, 39; and Korey, 12.

"We're all devastated," Candy Driskel, sister of Keith Driskel Sr., told the Kalamazoo Gazette. "You always expect this to happen to somebody else, never to you. They were a good family."

A tip led authorities to Keith Driskel Jr. at another area home, according to police. After the home's owners, a husband and wife, left the residence, police sealed off the area and began negotiating. Nearby homes also were evacuated.

An hour later, a gunshot was heard from the garage, where Driskel was found. Police described Driskel as "armed and dangerous" but have released few details about the murders, including how the family members died or a possible motive.

Deputies found the bodies late Monday after responding to reports of a "disturbance" at the home that the suspect and victims shared.
