My great grandparents, August (nickname Gust) Kotimäki and Maria Tapola, were born in Lappajärvi, Finland parish (similar to a Michigan township). As was the custom in much of Finland prior to about 1919, the surname was the name of the farm or home location where people lived. Following their marriage, Gust and Maria moved to the farm owned by Maria's parents and took on the Tapola surname.
