Son of David Jr. and Phoebe (Sands) McCamly.
In June 1831, Sands McCamly came to Michigan and saw the place where two rivers
meet. It wasn't until 1834 that he acquired the land he wanted. He built the
canal and developed the Mill Pond which brought water and industry to Battle
Creek, MI. Mr. McCamly suffered many hardships but never gave up his dream of
building a great city. In 1836, he and some of the other early settlers, drew
the first map of the Village of Battle Creek. Mr. McCamly was a business man
and, for years, operated a General Store. He was also an attorney and the year
that Michigan became a state, was elected State Senator. He instituted McCamly
Park because he felt every town should have its "Town square".
