OBITUARY Iron River Reporter May 16 1924 "Two Miners Meet Death In Mines: First Two Fatal Accidents of Year Reporter At Caspian and Forbes Mines"
Two Iron county miners came to their death this week within 48 hours of each other, Joseph Rosa of Caspian dying Monday six hours after being buried beneath a cave of dirt in the Caspian mine, and Alex Tuomi of Iron River dying nine hours after falling 40 feet from a benon [?] in stope No. 7 of the Forbes mine at 10:30 Wednesday morning.
Rosa, age 26, was trimming the wall of a drift in the Caspian mine after a blast when a slab of dirt from the side fell, burying him. He was rushed to the Verona hospital where a medical examination disclosed a punctured kidney and other internal injuries.
Rosa, it is said, was warned early in the morning by the captain, who with Mine Inspector D. J. Watts, had made the rounds of the mine. His inexperience as a miner is said to have contributed to the accident.
DRILL MACHINE SLIPS ... Both men were single and leave no near relatives in this country. Rosa, it is said, was to have been married next month.
FUNERAL THURSDAY Funeral services were held for Joseph Rosa Thursday morning from St. Cecelia's church at Caspian. The Italian Society marched as a body in the procession led by the Caspian band.
Interment was in the Iron River cemetery.
