Benjamin Samuel Ransom (Francis2, James1) was born on 25 May 1844 at Algansee. He was 5 feet 8 3/4 inches tall and weighed 131 lbs (at age 57). He served in the Civil War in Company M of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery.

He was married on 14 April 1867 at Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan to Alice Barber. The Reverend L. J. Huntley performed the ceremony. Alice was born on 20 June 1847 in Reading twp, Hillsdale County, Michigan, the daughter of Levi Kinney Barber and Hannah Avilda Berry.
Benjamin enlisted to serve in Company M of the 1st Michigan Light artillery on 8 September 1864 in Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. He was mustered the same day in Jackson as a private. During the war he was hospitalized for kidney disease the result of "strains from lifting cannon by orders of captain" . Benjamin was mustered out on 17 June 1865 at Knoxville, Tennessee. After the war, Benjamin was purported to be in poor health by family friends. James McClave swore that he saw Benjamin in a buggy with a pillow below his back, suffering from piles and chronic diarrhea. McClave, who was working for Benjamin's father, declared that "he could do nothing he had to go to the bushes quite often."
After the war, the family spent five years, from September 1867 to April 1872 in Benzie County, working with brother Elijah at the family mill.
On 10 June 1870, Benjamin and Alice were listed by the census taker in Almira, Benzie County with their children Laurel and Emma. Benjamin was working in the saw mill and owned $5,000 in real estate but only $100 in personal property. Alice was keeping house. Benjamin's brother Elijah lived next door. Afterwards he returned to Branch County and worked as a farmer.
In June 1880, Benajmin was living with his parents. Benjamin farmed and Alice helped keep house. Their children: Adella, laurel, Edith, and Roy lived with them. In 1894 the family moved to Grapevine, Tarrant County, Texas. In 1896, they returned to Branch County.
Benjamin died on 3 November 1901 at Quincy, Branch County supposedly from chronic nephritis or gastritis. M. J. Rawson was the undertaker.

Benjamin and Alice (Barber) Ransom were the parents of six children.

i. LAUREL ELIJAH RANSOM was born on 21 September 1868 in Almira township, Benzie County, Michigan.
ii. EDITH EMMA RANSOM was born on 23 April 1870 at Almira, Benzie County.
iii. ROY GRANVILLE RANSOM was born on 22 June 1873 at Algansee, Branch County.
iv. ROSS ALBERT "BENJAMIN" RANSOM was born on 25 September 1878 and died 26 September 1878 at Algansee, Branch County.
v. MARY ANN RANSOM was born on 3 November 1879 at Algansee.
vi. LEVI BAKER RANSOM was born 20 September 1886 and died on 21 September 21 at Algansee, Branch County, Michigan.
