(Research): Joseph Birchard Firsbie's grandfather, Joseph Frisbie, is said to have served in the Revolutionary War, and his paternal grandmother, Sarah Rogers, is said to have been a descendant of john Rogers, the martyr of Smithfield, England.
His father moved from Schoharie county to Whitetown, New York in 1824, thence to Unitca in 1825. HIs only brother and a sister died in infancy. He attended school in Utica till 1831, then moved to Richmondville, New York, where he attended school till 1836. In November, 1837, he moved to Michigan, where he taught from 1838 to 1840, and after two years of teaching in Rensselaerville, New York, returned to Michigan and continued in the same occupation till 1851.
May 8, 1842, he was commissioned captain of militia, and in 1846 he was elected town clerk.
He joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1833, was licensed to preach in 1843, and was ordained elder Oct. 3, 1846. In 1849 he withdrew from the Methodist Episcopal conference, accepted the doctrines of the Seventh-day Baptists in 1853, and during twenty years preached in thirty-five counties of Michigan.
