John was born the third of five children to James and Elizabeth Caldwell. He moved west when Michigan was just becoming a state, scouting here with brothers James and David in 1836, finally settling with his young family in September 1837. He was a cabinetmaker by trade, and soon became the county's first undertaker. He was also the first to export his goods. Was the father of ten children, five of whom preceded him in death. They were John M., Orlando, Margaret A., Eliza A., Josiah M., Mary A., Sarah E., Margaret E., James T. and David C. He was elected the village marshal several times, sexton of Oak Hill Cemetery and also as the county school board assessor. The cemetery has lost his burial record, though they have his lot purchase and the newspaper has an account of his burial.
