from The Marcellus News - February 1944

Marcellus has lost another of its oldest residents in the death of Mrs. Frances Beardsley, who passed away Wednesday morning, February 16, 1944 after an illness of three and one-half months. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Beardsley was born November 22, 1848 at Crown Point, Indiana, the daughter of Michael and Clarissa (Little) Vandercook who moved to Ann Arbor when she was three months old. She was educated in the Union High School in that city and at the age of sixteen, came to Marcellus with her parents and taught in Bly School for four years.

On January 1, 1866, she was married to Nelson J. Huber, who was engaged in the Mercantile business, although their were only three homes. To this union were born four children of whom one survives.

In 1911 she married William J Whitcomb who died in 1920.

In 1922 she was married to William Beardsley, a Civil War veteran who preceded her in death a few years ago. Mrs. Beardsley is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Alice Beebe, who has lived with her for several years; a brother, Hale Vandercook of Allegan, a well-known musician who is known as the "Father of Western State Teachers College" now Western Michigan College. Also surviving are one step-sister, Mrs. Walter Scanes of Kalamazoo; eight grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and ten great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Beardsley well remembered the Civil War, how quickly Co. A, 1st Michigan Infantry was formed at the University from the college men and drilling of troops on the grounds. The outlook on life was always bright, she holding that age is only a state of mind. She needed no glasses, was intensely interested in gardening and up to a few months ago contributed articles to the Marcellus News and other county papers. She was a charter member of the Eastern Star and New Century Club and was the last surviving member of the W.C.T.U. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Inez Martz will be held from the Romig Funeral Home Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with burial in the Bly Cemetery.
