Married Sarah Hice in 1836 in Pennsylvania. Emigrated from Pennsylvania to Michigan in 1853 with his family. Samuel was the father of seven children, including: Rebecca, Christian, Isaiah, Susannah, Elizabeth, Mary, & Elias.
Samuel served in the Union Army during the Civil War in the 13th Regiment, Company E, of the Michigan Infantry. He enlisted on December 23, 1863 and he mustered out due to disability on Jan 25, 1865 at Detroit, MI.
