MEN, MINES AND MEMORIES: IRON MINING IN IRON COUNTY, MICHIGAN page 24 "The Mining Location: Anna Pisoni-Boarding Housekeeper" (excerpt)
My story is long, is big. I was born in Norway, Michigan, and then my mother she sent me to Sporminore, Austria, when I was three years old and I was living with my aunties over there...My father came over to see me and he was preparing to bring me back to America again-I was thirteen year old then. Then he changed his mind... I was about eighteen year old when they took me back with them to Stambaugh.
My poor father don't have no luck. He was working for the Baltic mine and he lost his life. That was exactly how many years? It was May 28, 1904 when he lost his life. He had a job to dumping the ore into the car...But this day he (Billy Jobe, Supt) said, "Listen, I'm going to help you out for a while"...My father said to Billy Jobe, "I give you strictly order, just leave one car go down alone"-the empty cars was coming from the shaft that way to my poor father at the pocket, because he said, "If you got one car if the brake is no good, it will be all right alone." Billy Jobe go up and leave that car to come down to fill it. And you know him, he let two cars come down at the same time, not one, but two. My father was standing on the car beneath the pocket. The shock of hitting was so much that my poor father lost his control and fell down in the track and he lost his life right there. He was only 48.
Billy Jobe came to the house crying. "It's my fault. I'm to blame. You won't go hungry. Your family will be well taken care of." Yah, three months later he kicked her (mother) out of the company house. Those days were bad. There was no social security, there was no compensation and my poor mother was getting a little help from the county, but it's a good thing that we always had boarders. We was working hard making a go of it as best we could.

The trail leading to Spring Valley meandered through the present townsite to the bridge near the early Calliari Hotel.
About 1903, 1904 when the Berkshire mine opened, business men sensed quick growth of the district and acquired lands to the west of the Fogarty and platted a townsite for the village of Palatka. The only family known to occupy the plat was the Calliari family which erected a large boarding house, hall, and bakery.

OBITUARY of Joseph Calliari 1991 (buried Wyandot County Ohio) says Pasquali Calliari was his father.

OBITUARY of Mary Calliari 1941 says in 1900 she and her husband, the late Paul Calliari, came to Caspian. They built the old Palatka hotel, Caspian landmark, in 1907 and conducted it for many years.
